finally.. (only for UoL/Thunderbird users)

This has been bugging me for a while.. active directory and thunderbird in linux. For whatever reason ITD decided to split the active directory server and staff exchange server as two separate points of failure. Furthermore the staffexchange is on the 136 domain and the AD is on the 10.220 domain. why? dunno. perhaps security and ease of access from external sites.

anyhooos to get the nifty address book working in TB use the following setting.. where of course you will use your username instead of mine. Also important is to ul and campus in lower case in the bind DN box. leave the port to 389 – it won’t work on the 3268 port like some of the googled solutions I found. For reference I got ldp.exe from the windows xp server service tool (free) and found the AD server, logged in and found the bind DN / port settings.

When you search you will be prompted for a password. enter your UL/STAFF password and away you go.

60 litres gets you a long way..

I did some amount of driving last week (but I think shelly beats me with 2 return trips to Dublin and a return trip to Belfast!). I filled up in Limerick and put close to 50 euros into the tank – the pump cut out so I knew I had a full tank (60 litres). The nice thing about driving long distances with empty roads is one can managed to drive over 770kms on a tank! The almera seems pretty economical.

Driving back from Belfast we called into Monaghan to see Connie and family. Mrs Connolly provided sustenance after we came back from touring Connies mansion on the hill. The dinner was much appreciated, we were getting very hungry – it took some time to see all the rooms in the house!! Then came tasty desert – pavlova – up to it’s usual high standard. After eating the entire pavlova and a couple of slices of apple tart on the side Shelly and I hit the road for Limerick absolutely stuffed. Until the next pavlova – thanks!

I’ve noticed in Portumna the price of petrol has fallen below the 1euro mark to 99.9 – great to see prices fall now-and-again.
