Got some post from Bord Gais today. They had 4 laptops stolen. One of the laptops wasn’t encrypted. Coincidentally that laptop had all the names, addresses and bank details for 75,000 new customers. Yes you could feel quite angry with this happening and yes you could feel worried with the possibility that someone could try to empty your bank account – but I don’t. There are bigger things in life to be concerned about – worrying about something that may or may not happen isn’t helpful. It’s funny.. the things you take for granted are the things you need to appreciate the most… e.g your family. Anyhoo..
you don’t need to worry about it anyway.
Even though the data wasn’t encrypted, it’s perfectly safe because the computer had a user name and password. So you can sleep easy.
And of course how would any thief know that the data on the laptop was potentially very valuable on the black market. It’s just another randomly stolem computer. The only way they could possibly know it was valuable was if it was all over the news….. oh wait….
agreed – the laptop was probably ‘sold’ the day it was stolen and (hopefully) reformatted since.
Anyone buy a laptop on ebay recently
?
Apparently the Gardai did figure out who could have taken them and tried to negotiate to get them back…well they said that they could be returned. But the news was actually not released until 2 weeks after the theft. This was criticised by many people but was probably the right course of action.

Strange how a large company doesn’t use some basic standard encryption though, basic full hard drive encryption now comes with Mac OS and Vista Business.
Do you think Bord Gais will send me back that €200 security deposit you have to pay when you sign up for Gas (even with DD)?
