Gmail Gets Themes

Finally.. Gmail gets themes.

Shiny new themes that don’t kill Gmail - like stylish.

Log into gmail and Click Settings.. there you will find Themes - pick your favourite (shiny is my current fav).  I’m sure it won’t be long until the user community can contribute and add new themes.

Thank you Gmail

Flock - What is it all about ?

So there is yet another web browsers on the scene. Flock.

So what is it? well according to the wiki blurb  -

Flock is a web browser built on Mozilla’s Firefox codebase that specializes in providing social networking and Web 2.0 facilities built into its user interface.  On June 16th 2008, the latest version of the browser, Flock 2 (based on Mozilla’s Firefox 3), went into open beta.

Is it any good?  Well it’s firefox for social networks, you get all your facebook ( and every other  social network ) updates shown in a handy “people” sidetab.  You have your email setup so it’s accessible with a push of a button. You can blog directly from the browser without having to login to Wordpress, Blogger etc. (in fact this blog entry came from Flocks Blog Post app). You can clip all your favourite bookmarks, get twitter updates, pownce on things, digg stuff - the list goes on and on..

Will I stay using it ? don’t think so. It’s not for me (it’s almost social network overload!!) but I am sure some people will love it!

Blogged with the Flock Browser

How to improve gmail

gmail is great! I use it all the time - but sometimes I wish for some additional features, make it a little prettier and so on.  I did a little bit of digging around on Firefox extension website and I found the mother ship of firefox addons: Better Gmail 2

It’s basically a collection of the best grease monkey scripts out there for gmail, there is a similar one for calendar although I don’t think it’s as good - but with all things web 2.0 it’s work in progress.

Synchronising across multiple machines

This has been a real bug bear for me recently. I have a linux box, a laptop that can be linux or windows and windows box for development. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to work on the same document/image etc. on different machines? There has be quite a few alternatives, including a really good one from an Irish startup - PutPlace - however with Linux not supported it made me to search for the holy grail. I think I’ve found it.

Dropbox

It creates a directory on each machine and synchronises files/photos/folders/whatever when changes are made (over SSL too!).

You can share stuff with other dropbox users : This is perfect for small teams working on projects, document etc.

  • Any member of a shared folder can add, edit and delete the contents within.
  • Collaborators of your shared folder won’t have access to any of your files outside of that folder.
  • Changes made to a shared folder are instantly sent to every member of that folder.

For non dropbox users you have a ‘Public Folder’ where they can pickup what ever you’ve shared. (I see this feature being really handy for sharing one-off stuff - eh fluffy?)

I love it !

Add that little extra something to your website

With a lot of things in life it takes time to get the perfect finish. Personally I spend a bit of time hunting (editing/photoshopping) images to enhance a blog entry or spend a bit of time linking to other sites just to make the post a little bit better for the reader.

Over on the other blog I started testing apture - and I have to say I like it! I first saw it on the bbc.co.uk site and thought ‘wouldn’t it be great if I could have it on my site!?’ . Great news - you can - and for free!

So what does it do? Once you upload your new post apture adds super rich media content with a single click to a selected word(s). Here is an example of what it can do:

Tom went to the Ting Tings concert in the RDS and took this video on his phone.

neat eh?
